ATPL Air Traffic Control Practice Test

What does a missed approach procedure aim to achieve?

To provide an alternative route for an aircraft ready for departure.

To ensure a safe departure from the landing configuration.

To facilitate re-entry into the approach for a second attempt.

To offer direction for an aircraft unable to land.

A missed approach procedure is specifically designed to provide guidance for an aircraft that cannot safely land due to various factors, such as insufficient visibility, obstacles on the runway, or any other potential hazards. It is established to ensure that if a pilot makes the decision to abort the landing during the final approach, they have a clear and defined route to follow in order to safely reposition the aircraft.

This procedure typically includes specific altitudes, headings, and waypoints that the aircraft must follow to safely climb away from the airport and enter a holding pattern or prepare for a subsequent approach. This is crucial for maintaining situational awareness and preventing accidents during a critical phase of flight when visual references may be lacking.

In contrast, alternative routes for departures or safe departures from landing configurations do not align with the purpose of a missed approach, as they focus on phases of flight prior to or subsequent to landing. The missed approach procedure is a pivotal component of aviation safety that directly addresses a situation that occurs after attempting to land, ensuring that pilots can manage their aircraft confidently in scenarios where landing is not feasible.
